The Colorado Energy Office, backed by the governor’s office and the Office of Just Transition, reached out to Routt County commissioners March 10 with a request for a letter of support that centers on a U.S. Department of Energy request for information due April 1 on establishing “nuclear lifecycle innovation campuses.”” Northwest Colorado elk herds bounce back three years after tough winter ““Looking at the landscape today, it’s hard to believe that just three years ago we were experiencing the worst winter we had seen in 70 years,” said Darby Finley, Colorado Parks and Wildlife’s terrestrial biologist in Meeker, in a news release. “That spring, we saw some of the lowest survival rates ever recorded by CPW biologists. Although CPW staff and Director Laura Clellan recommended the petition be denied, the commission is the ultimate decision-maker. …[M]any opponents are calling the way the commission came to the vote — before a crowd that topped 400 at the DoubleTree hotel in Westminster — a “show of incompetence” so confusing they can’t understand what happened, and an erosion of trust that’s been building at least since the start of wolf reintroduction.” Colorado legislature kills bill barring beaver hunting or trapping on public lands “A beaver no-kill bill pitched as a way to expand Colorado’s wildfire and drought mitigation efforts failed in a state legislative committee Monday, preserving current rights to hunt and trap the animals on public lands. …One of the primary backers, the Center for Biological Diversity, had called the bill “a cost-free solution to Colorado’s wildfire and drought crises by protecting our state’s beavers from being trapped and killed for recreation …Hunting, fishing and trapping groups that opposed the bill said beaver management, including recreational taking, should be managed by scientists at Colorado Parks and Wildlife and other agencies, not politics in the legislature.”
